Melanin is a pigment responsible for producing color in skin and when skin is insulted by aggressors, such as UV exposure, hormonal fluctuations, inflammation, or other skin injuries, including those related to acne, it produces excess melanin as a protective response. This excess melanin results in the appearance of dark spots and discolorations. People with darker Asian, Mediterranean, or African skin tones are also prone to skin discoloration, especially if they experience excess sun exposure.
